Jennifer Kae, German-Filipina sensation

30 07 2008

Because I love watching Deutsche-Welle TV, I sometimes get pleasant surprises like this. Jennifer Kae, the 20-year old daughter of a Filipina immigrant, is dubbed as Germany’s answer to Alicia Keys (naks!). Maybe our singers/artists can change the world’s perception of the Philippines. A little positivity, please.

Here’s the official video for “Little White Lies”. My favorite part of the lyrics?

“So go ahead and hate me

If it makes it easy”

how everything is connected

Scientist Amory Lovins was invited to a forum about profitable climate protection, and in his speech he shares a funny story about how everything we do affects everything else. The flying cats must’ve been really something. Taken from Treehugger. ;)

robbers stole my internet!

28 04 2008

dear world,

something happened to me that can only occur in a third world country: a thief stole the copper wires of our block’s phone lines. now we don’t have a landline, and we don’t have DSL.

yup, you read that right. presumably to sell them in scrap houses. that’s how hard it is to make a living over here, what with the rising food prices.

know what’s funny? it’s the third time this has happened here. the last two times it took the phone company several weeks to get everything fixed. one time they even jumbled the wires, such that the phone numbers got routed to the wrong households. chaos.

so, ’til then, i just wanted to explain my absence, writing to you in this dark, damp Internet cafe. don’t you just love living in the Philippines?

xoxo,
Scout Finch

Friends Forever

Yan-yan, Celine’s 9-year old neighbor, went inside the room and wrote this on our “office” whiteboard. It has our names and the names of other kids on the block. I don’t know why, but it struck me. Maybe because it reminds me of the time I was as innocent as to believe in forever. It has been a long, long while.
