Analysis/Paralysis

25 05 2009

- It took an incredible amount of self-control to stop myself from clicking on that “Send” button. I don’t know if I did the right thing.

- Bumabaliktad na naman tulog ko. I sleep around 3am now. Feeling restless at night.

- Ugh, mainit sa Pilipinas. 33 degrees Celsius according to Wolfram|Alpha. No wonder ang konti ng tao kahit sa palengke kanina. Nakakatamad gumalaw.

- Missing Fil-Am activist surfaces after 7 days. Nakasama ko sya sa Mindoro a few years ago. Glad to know she’s OK. Malamang natakot yung mga dumukot kasi American citizen sya. I fear her two other missing companions won’t be as lucky.

- RP’s Dante Mendoza: Best director at Cannes. That’s a first for the country, and in true Filipino fashion, he was still cramming to finish post-production in Paris days before the festival.

- I need to see Andy.

Today is Blog Action Day!

Now here’s an interesting proposition: can you change the world by blogging?

Fil-Ams rally in front of ABC office

After the Desperate Housewives fiasco and ABC’s one-paragraph apology, which some people took as an insult, Filipino-Americans marched the streets to call for a boycott. Here’s a related video:

The Desperate Housewives Slur Against Philippine Med Schools (Filipinos tend to be doormats and other comments)

5 10 2007

Taken from an article in E! Online:

I don’t watch this show, but it seems you can’t sit in a dark room by yourself, without offending someone. We have become such a touchy-feely society, that someone is almost guaranteed to be offended at anything shown somewhere in the world. If you don’t like it, change the channel. All this complaining is keeping lawyers in new Mercedes. I’m waiting for the backlash, because sooner or later there will be one. azkobushi on 10/04/2007 11:45AM

I agree with azkobushi. This whole political correctness thing has gotten way out of hand, particularly in the context of off-handed remark on a TV show. bnbliss on 10/04/2007 11:57AM

It was a freakin joke people – lighten up for crying out loud. jalee27 on 10/04/2007 11:58AM

If you all were Filipinos, you would be singing a different tune. I agree that the network and the shows producers SHOULD apologize. If we get targeted for saying a racial slur here in the US, it’s not okay and we get slammed. So, why is it okay for derogatory comments to be made about individuals in other countries? If it’s not okay for the African Americans, Hispanics, etc., then it should not be okay for people from a different country. Why is it necessary to put down people from another country to make a freakin’ joke. It’s not at all funny. evanettie on 10/04/2007 12:26PM

If the word “Filipino” was replaced with Gay or Muslim or Black or Latino, I am sure the entire USA will be in an uproar. Why is it that the very people who cry against discrimination (like the Democrats) will remain silent on a racial slur like this? The answer: Because Filipinos tend to be doormats John217 on 10/04/2007 12:47PM

Ja Rule: Gays are the Root of all Evil

1 10 2007

Ja Rule told Complex Magazine that gays are pretty much evil and to blame for America’s problems. He wants to shift the blame society puts on rap onto the gays.

“And if it is, then we need to go step to Paramount, and fucking MGM, and all of these other motherfuckers that’s making all of these movies and we need to go step to MTV and Viacom, and lets talk about all these fucking shows that they have on MTV that is promoting homosexuality, that my kids can’t watch this shit,” he continued. “Dating shows that’s showing two guys or two girls in mid-afternoon. Let’s talk about shit like that! If that’s not fucking up America, I don’t know what is.”

GLAAD responded with a statement.

ja_rule.jpg“No fair-minded person can look at JaRule’s interview with Complex Magazine and believe for one second that his children could be more harmed by what they might see on television than by the vulgarity and prejudice that comes out of their father’s mouth.”

Support the Myanmar Freedom Uprising

28 09 2007

Support the Myanmar freedom uprising by signing this petition.

After decades of military dictatorship, the people of Burma are rising — and they need our help. Marches begun by monks and nuns have snowballed, bringing hundreds of thousands to the streets. Now the crackdown has begun…

When the Burmese last marched in 1988, the military massacred over 3,000 protesters. But if the world stands up and supports their struggle, this time they could succeed. We’ll send our petition to United Nations Security Council members (including the dictatorship’s main backer China) and to media at the UN, while also alerting the Burmese to our support:

To Chinese President Hu Jintao and the UN Security Council: We stand alongside the citizens of Burma in their peaceful protests. We urge you to oppose a violent crackdown on the demonstrators, and to support genuine reconciliation and democracy in Burma. We pledge to hold you accountable for any further bloodshed.

Stop the slaughter. Act now to support the marchers.

Media group joins condemnation of ‘censorship’

MANILA, Philippines — Two men struggle through tall grass, running away.

The unseen man with the camera, trailing the other in red, prods: “Takbo, Juan. Takbo [Run, Juan. Run]!”

They run to a clearing, gunshots ring out. Juan falls on the ground. The unseen companion desperately shouts: “Huwag kayo magpaputok [Don’t shoot]!” as he runs towards his fallen comrade.

Again gunshots, and the unseen cameraman falls. His last vision, Juan’s red shirt before the screen blackens and is replaced by the glaring words: “Stop the killing of activists and journalists.”

undermines the faith and confidence of the government and duly
constituted authorities for public exhibition.”
