this ends now: in memory of cris mendez

my journal comic #5. a small contribution to the cause.

Violence begets violence, until someone stands up and says, “this is stupid.” Then, with a bit of will power, changes begin to take place. Frat boys call outsiders barbarians. It would serve them well to look at the mirror.

—————————————————————-

For a background on campus violence: “Niño Calinao, Cris Anthony Mendez, Dennis Venturina at ang mga diyos sa UP”. And here’s from the Peyups forums:

“shout for justice, rock for cris: a benefit concert for cris anthony mendez”
when: september 27, 2007
where: bahay ng alumni, UP Diliman

All proceeds will go to Cris’ family, especially his brother Renz, for his college education. Please extend your support by attending. Thanks!

That’s an excellent work of yours carrying a very apt message. I follow the Peyups thread. I’m really upset that this meaningless death happened again.

Thanks, mogli. I was in college during the late 90’s, the height of the hazing murders. It bordered on the ridiculous to hear of so many campus deaths. Some people never learn, huh.

Sorry, pero ngayon ko lang nalaman ito. Barbarians ang tawag nila sa outsiders? Hahaha. A very strong statement coming from a bunch of social-climbing proletarian opportunists looking for instant, useful, socio-political networks.

i do wish he opted not to join, because from what i’ve heard, he’s brilliant anyway. however, it’s not cris’ fault that he was born poor, or that in this country, connections are worth so much more than brains.

It’s been a month since the brutal death of Cris Anthony Mendez. Probably, we’ll hear less of the news about his death, it may even fade away. However, let us not forget the about the senseless death of Cris as well as those of the other victims of frat violence in the past. I hope and pray that our lawmakers will do something about this so that there will be no more wasted lives of our promising youth. I read that Joey Lina is planning to hold a hazing congress; he even suggested in his radio program that a National Anti-Hazing Prevention Week be promulgated to remind our youth that this practice or rite is totally unnecessary. Most of all, let us all pray that justice be served to the family of Cris Anthony very soon.

Correction is mine; it should have been written as National Anti-Hazing Week or National Hazing Prevention Week. By the way, former senator Joey Lina was the author of R.A. 8047, known as Anti-Hazing Law.

Thanks.

Another typo error; that is R.A. 8049.

That’s OK. Happens to the best of us. ;)

As long as people like you still remember, this case won’t die. Cris’ mom didn’t accept the offer of blood money. That took guts. She inspires me not to lose hope.
